What is Quartz?

 Quartz

is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. Its chemical formula is SiO2, which means it's made up of one silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms in a repeating pattern. This structure gives quartz its unique crystal properties.

Crystal Structure:

Quartz crystallizes in the trigonal system(5), one of the seven crystal systems. The trigonal system is characterized by a three-fold axis of rotation. This means the crystal can be rotated by 120 degrees around this axis and appear unchanged. In terms of its unit cell, it can be described by a rhombohedral lattice where all three axes are equal in length (a = b = c) and all three angles between them are equal but not 90 degrees (α = β = γ 90°). The specific arrangement of silicon and oxygen atoms in quartz creates this characteristic three-fold symmetry

Seven crystal systems Symmetry and Lattice Examples
(1) Isometric (Cubic) System All sides and angles are equal, with all faces being square pyramids.(a=b=c, all angles 90 degrees) Halite (rock salt), Galena (lead sulfide), and Copper are some of the minerals that crystallize in this system. Sodium chloride, diamond.
(2) Tetragonal System The angles between all faces are 90 degrees, and the two diagonals of the unit cell are equal, and one is different (a = b c) Zinc oxide (ZnO) and Rutile (TiO2) are minerals that crystallize in this system. Tin, zircon.
(3) Orthorhombic System The angles between the faces are not equal, and the diagonal planes of the unit cell are not parallel. All three axes are unequal in length (a b c) Arsenic (As), Selenite (gypsum), and Fluorite (CaF2) are examples of minerals in this system. sulfur, olivine
(4) Monoclinic System All three axes are unequal in length (a b c), and only two of the angles between these axes are 90 degrees (e.g., α = γ = 90°, but β 90°) Carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2·3H2O) are minerals in this system. Gypsum, micas
(5) Trigonal (Triclinic) System Faces that are not parallel to each other are not equal in shape. Three unequal axes (a b c) and three unequal angles between these axes, none of which are 90 degrees (α β γ 90°)  Quartz, Tourmaline, and Calcite (CaCO3) crystallize in this system. Emerald, Aquamarine.
(6) Hexagonal System The angles between the faces are 120 degrees, and the unit cell has a hexagonal shape.  Two axes are equal in length and are at 120 degrees to each other, while the third axis is of a different length and is perpendicular to the plane of the other two (a = b c, α = β = 90°, γ = 120°) Apatite (Ca(PO)(F, Cl, OH)), Beryl (BeAlSiO₁₈), Ruby (red corundum) and Sapphire (all colors of corundum except red, Graphite(c) , zinc (Zn)

(7) Triclinic System There are no equal angles between the faces, making the crystal quite asymmetrical. All three axes are unequal (a b c). Angles: All three angles between the axes are unequal and not 90 degrees (α β γ 90°). Anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and Feldspar (albite): Albite (NaAlSiO)Kyanite (AlSiO

The hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure of quartz is characterized by:

  • Silicon atoms at the center of the unit cell, surrounded by four oxygen atoms.

  • Oxygen atoms arranged in a tetrahedral shape around the silicon atom.

  • Each oxygen atom is shared with four neighboring silicon atoms, creating a 3D network of silicon-oxygen bonds.

Crystal Properties - useful for various applications:

  • Piezoelectricity: As mentioned earlier, quartz crystals can generate an electric charge when subjected to mechanical stress, such as pressure or vibration.

  • Hardness: Quartz is one of the hardest minerals on Earth, with a Mohs hardness of 7.

  • Density: Quartz has a density of around 2.65 g/cm3, which is relatively high.

  • Optical properties: Quartz is transparent to opaque, depending on the type of quartz and the presence of impurities.

Healing Properties:

Quartz crystals are believed to possess healing properties, although these claims are not scientifically proven. Some of the associated benefits include:

  • Amplifying intentions: Quartz is said to amplify the user's intentions and energies.

  • Protecting against negative energies: Quartz is believed to offer protection against negative energies and vibrations.

  • Enhancing clarity and focus: Quartz is thought to enhance clarity and focus, making it easier to connect with one's inner self.

Keep in mind that the healing properties of crystals are based on anecdotal evidence and have not been scientifically proven. While some people may find value in using quartz crystals for spiritual or emotional purposes, others may not.
